Chapter 3 of my book Just Lead looks at leaders who “see what they want to see” and make decisions based on filtered or flattering feedback. Marie Antoinette’s infamous detachment, which I cleverly and very obviously included in my video, “Let them eat cake,” is a classic example of poor judgment grounded in privilege and ignorance.
If you haven’t read the book, JUST is an acronym for judgment, understanding, selflessness, and trust. At the same time, the queen didn’t make the cut and find herself in the book; she well could have. Her story is extreme, but not too far from today’s reality.
JUST LEAD warns leaders of what happens when they make decisions without real input or awareness. We might call it “tone deaf” today. Or, tell Antionette to “read the room.” Judgment isn’t just about making the right call—it’s about understanding the magnitude of impact when you don’t.
My video is a parody, but she did lose her head, you know, so don’t forget to solicit input and information from your followers or be prepared to face the consequences.

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." I find unique historical events and do my best to connect them to today's ethical leadership challenges, because a better world starts with better leaders. We should all strive to be better.
